Cardinal Francis Arinze

Prefect Emeritus Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments

Cardinal Francis Arinze was born in Nigeria on November 1, 1932.  He was ordained a priest in Rome (1958), appointed Archbishop to the See of Onitsha in 1967 and elevated to a Cardinal in 1985.  He served as President of the Secretariat for Non-Christians, the precursor to the current Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue until October 1, 2002. when he was named Prefect of Divine Worship and the discipline of the Sacraments.  His Eminence is now Prefect Emeritus also a member of (11) other Congregations at the Vatican.

May 25, 1985  - Made Cardinal at Consistory by Pope John Paul II
May 27, 1985 – Appointed President of Secretariat for Non-Christians, 1988 Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue.
Oct 1, 2010 – Appointed Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.
